# Floor plan editor

> Draw the walls, doors and stairs of each floor. CX builds the map and the directions from them.

The floor plan is the base of everything: the map visitors see, the store outlines and the directions. You draw it once per floor in the floor plan editor, usually by tracing over an image of your plan.

## Open the editor

Go to **General > Configuration > Floor plan** and choose **Create floor plan** (or **Edit floor plan**). The editor opens full screen. Use the back arrow at the top to close it.

## Draw your first floor

**1. Upload the plan image**

Choose **Upload image** and pick a PNG, JPG or WebP file of the floor (up to 10 MB). Export PDF plans as an image first.

**2. Set the scale**

Click two points on the image whose real distance you know, such as both ends of a long wall. Enter the distance in metres and choose **Apply scale**.

**3. Trace the walls**

Choose the **Wall** tool (W). Click to place corners. Double-click or press Enter to finish, or click the first corner to close a room. To get an exact length, type it and press Enter.

**4. Add doors**

Choose the **Door** tool (D) and click on a wall. Doors matter: store entrances and routes use them.

**5. Add stairs**

Choose the **Stairs** tool (S). Click both ends of the bottom step, then click where the stairs end. Stairs always lead to the floor above.

**6. Save**

Choose **Save**. Visitors see the new map within a few minutes.

## Tools

The tools are at the bottom of the canvas. The right panel always explains how the current tool works.

| Tool | Key | Use it to |
| - | - | - |
| Select | V | Select, move and reshape what you drew |
| Pan | H | Move around the plan. You can also hold the space bar with any tool. |
| Wall | W | Draw walls |
| Door | D | Add doors to walls |
| Floor area | A | Outline an area of the floor |
| Stairs | S | Add stairs to the floor above |
| Background | B | Move the plan image |
| Map location | M | Place the building on the street map. See [Street map](https://cxdocs.planpoint.io/project/street-map.md). |

To make a **window**, add a door, select it and change **Type** to **Window**. Windows are shown as glass and visitors are not routed through them.

## Edit what you drew

* Click an item to select it. The right panel shows its settings, such as wall **Thickness (cm)** or door **Width (cm)**.
* Drag a selected wall, door or stairs to move it, or drag its corners to reshape it.
* Double-click a wall to add a corner.
* Press Delete to remove the selection.
* Hold Shift while drawing to place points without snapping.

## Floors

* Use the floor picker at the top to switch floors.
* **+** adds a floor above the top floor.
* Rename a floor in the right panel under **Floor > Name** (with nothing selected).
* The trash button removes the top floor. Stores on that floor no longer appear on the map.

## Layers and 3D preview

The **Layers** panel on the left lets you show or hide the plan image, street map, floor below and grid. It also lists everything on the floor; click an item to jump to it.

The **3D preview** in the bottom-right corner updates as you draw. Choose **Open large 3D preview** to look around, then **Back to editing**.

## Undo, history and recovery

* **Undo** and **Redo** work for every change (⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z).
* **Discard** throws away all unsaved changes.
* **History** lists the last 30 saved versions. Choose **Restore** to go back to one.
* If the browser closes before you save, the editor offers to **Restore** your unsaved drawing the next time you open it.

## Elevators and escalators

You don't draw elevators and escalators in the floor plan. Add them as amenities with the same name on each floor, such as **Elevator 1**, and visitors are routed between those floors. See [Floor links](https://cxdocs.planpoint.io/wayfinding/vertical-connections.md).

## After you save

* **Directions update by themselves.** There is nothing to publish.
* **Store outlines don't move with the walls.** If you moved walls, check the store outlines in [Map spaces](https://cxdocs.planpoint.io/directory/map-spaces.md).
* If several experiences share this floor plan, the editor tells you. Your changes appear in all of them.
